Grave Memory is book three of the Alex Craft books and I am quickly churning through this series. In fact, I’m going through it so quickly that I just started the last of the published books. I will be… not sad exactly when there are no more books to read, but something like sad. The books are playing with different death myths, and they’re fun and light and good escapism.
In Grave Memory Alex starts investigating an apparent suicide, which she witnesses, when the ghost of said person swears up and down that they didn’t commit suicide. She uncovers a weird pattern of suicides the lack of memory of the victims leading up to the suicides only causes her to believe something supernatural is involved. She’s also dealing with the Winter Queen, who wants Alex to join her court. Not only does the Queen pursue a forced harassment campaign she holds one of Alex’s love interests hostage (kind of). And then there’s the complications with Death and his world. If I’m honest I don’t care at all about the love triangle or either of the romance interests, though I’m rooting for Falin because I’m grossed out by the romance with an adult who has known her for her whole life. This is also the book where we discover that Alex is kind of a terrible friend. I mean, she has reasons, but that doesn’t change the fact that she’s kind of terrible. However, at least she HAS female friends. Friends who have their own lives and worries. Female friends specifically. The existence of these female friends goes a long way to helping me overlook the stupid love triangle crap. We’re also slowly delving into the mystery of who and what she is, and uncovering the secrets her father holds. I have a lot of suspicion about who her father actually is, but nothing is confirmed and I’m really interested in THAT. I suspect it’ll be several more books before we go there though.
Basically, these are great little brain candy books and I’ve been enjoying my time reading them.
