1, 2, 3, 4, I Declare an Actual War

June 30, 2017 by emmalita Leave a Comment

Happy Canada Day! And Happy 150th Birthday Canada! I celebrated with a team up of two Canadian superheroes and one American – Deadpool, Wolverine, and Captain America. Rest easy Canada, Wolverine and Captain America didn’t go along willingly.

I am so happy to dive back into my favorite Deadpool (sorry RyRy!). Duggan and Posehn’s take on the Merc with the Mouth stole my heart in Vol. 1, Dead Presidents. Their Deadpool is funny, irreverent, and crazy as a bedbug. He wants to do the right thing, and carries so much baggage it has broken his brain. It’s a beautiful blend of darkness and light.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly opens with a flashback to that time In the 1970’s that Deadpool teamed up with Luke Cage and Iron Fist. As with most Deadpool team ups, he is unwanted and unwelcome. Their foe is the appropriately, but unfortunately, named, The White Man. Which leads to a lot of White Man jokes. The White Man is frozen by Deadpool in the 1970’s and accidentally unfrozen in the modern era, but before the Deadpool movie.

In the current climate of emboldened white supremacists, this was exactly the black humor I needed to get me through the day.

As a reminder, Agent Preston is still stuck in Deadpool’s head, so he has conversations with himself, the reader and Agent Preston. A shadowy figure has been targeting Deadpool, so he decides to talk to two other super soldiers – Wolverine and Captain America. It appears that a scientist has been tracking Deadpool, doing something to him and then erasing his memories. This doesn’t help Deadpool’s inner landscape of crazy.

I won’t describe the plot any further. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly has more emotional weight than Dead Presidents or Soul Hunter. It leaves Deadpool in an interesting place.
