Grave Ransom is the fifth book in the Alex Craft series, there may be spoilers in this review though I will try to avoid them. Non-spoilery review? I enjoy this series for the brainless mind-candy that it is. It’s got good female characters, including a strong group of lady friends for our protagonist, and in general it’s just fun Urban Fantasy.
I will say, I read this over a week ago and I’ve mostly forgotten it. I had to read the Goodreads blurb to remind myself about what happened. That doesn’t mean it’s not a good book, it just means that I’ve got a crappy memory and the book doesn’t stand out that much. So, in this book there is someone putting the souls of people into bodies that are not their own and then having those bodies commit crimes. Now because bodies die when the souls are separated from them in this particular book series that means that dead people are walking around and so Alex gets pulled into the investigation.
The love triangle between Alex, Death and the Fae guy takes a backseat in this book, which I definitely appreciated. The romance is there, and there are sexy times with Death this time around, but the question of “who is Alex going to choose” isn’t brought up all that often. I’m still skeeved out by the relationship with Death, but it wasn’t quite as big a deal. I do wish that the book had gone more into Alex’s history and the family stuff that’s lurking in the overarching plot, but as a one and done this is fine. I don’t think you would be too lost if you started with this book.
If you’re looking for an urban fantasy series to quench your urban fantasy thirst, this one is decent enough.
