Further adventures in terrible book covers

February 3, 2018 by TheShitWizard 2 Comments

The second book in the Hidden Legacy series, despite being warned by you all I didn’t believe it was possible that the cover for White Hot could be any worse than that for Burn For Me. I was so wrong, and you were soooo right. Why is he sniffing her forehead? Are those abs painted on? Are the publishers actively trying to put people off from buying this? The mind boggles…

In the aftermath of Burn For Me’s adventures, when not practicing her magic Nevada has been sulking about Mad Rogan disappearing from her life, even though she told him to sod off, while her family can’t stop teasing her about him. So it’s a welcome distraction when Cornelius Harrison, not-Prime son of a not particularly powerful House, walks into her office. The recently widowed father of a small girl wants to know who killed his wife, a lawyer for House Forsburg, who are now shirking their responsibility in meting out justice. Taking on the case brings Nevada further into the upper echelons of magical society and into a tangled web of conspiracy to overthrow Houston and bring about a magical dictatorship. Naturally, it also brings her back into contact with Rogan, who still wants nothing more than to bone Nevada and whose traitorous cousin from the first book would seem to be at the heart of the threat.

Meanwhile, an escapade from between books where she’s ripped the truth from a kidnapper to save the life of a young girl, has brought her talents to the attentions of another scary and powerful mage, who has more than just her magic in common with her and who poses a significant threat to the safety of her family.

Not quite as enjoyable as the first, I still ripped through this in a couple of sittings, and despite some of it being entirely predictable (Nevada was always bound to stop fighting her attraction to Rogan, whose frightening background was always going to have revealed him to have simply been misunderstood) there were enough other enjoyable little moments (heist by ferret, anyone?) to offset it.

Onto the next…and I can’t wait to see what monstrosity is waiting to offend my eyeballs on the cover.

Oh, the next one isn’t even half as bad, and in a hilarious development, because the abs on this one looks so bad, the male cover model is actually wearing a t-shirt on the third cover. Yup, there was such an uproar (and so many people photoshopping t-shirts onto the cover model of this one) that Avon’s design department gave in and covered up the gratuitous man-titty. :D

Not saying that Wildfire has a great cover (the whole Hidden Legacy trilogy ranks high in awful Ilona Andrews covers), but nothing is as bad as White Hot.

I’m cackling at gratuitous man-titty ? and slightly disappointed to hear that they’ve reined in their worst impulses for the next.
