Flames…flames on the side of my face

April 8, 2018 by TheShitWizard 5 Comments

OK, I may be getting somewhat over-invested in these books, if the towering rage that I spent two thirds of it is anything to go by…

When Kate and Curran are asked to travel to Europe to protect a pregnant shapeshifter from the two rival clans whose members may have impregnated her (and her Dad’s clan too, just because he’s a dick), they know that they are walking into a trap. Being aware of said trap, they’re pretty certain they can deal with whatever the consequences of their trip may be. Unfortunately for my blood pressure, they haven’t quite anticipated the exact forms those traps may take and so, as we’re introduced to the raging assholes who exclusively populate the island of Colchis, we get to watch Kate be repeatedly publicly betrayed and humiliated while not being able to mete out any form of payback thanks to the stupid rules of the Pack, while Curran behaves like the most colossal asshole of all.

This book has an awful lot going on – and not all of it stoked my fury. The very fact that the book takes place exclusively outside Atlanta and instead travels to a place that has always loomed large in my imagination really tickled my glee spot, and the pirate were-dolphins had me cackling. I also really, really enjoyed the character of Hugh and the dynamics of his relationship with Kate, and thought it was a terrible shame that he didn’t get to beat Curran into a pile of mush.

The tension that Andrews has worked into this book does its job fantastically – I was so tense and angry come the end of the book that it very nearly ruined the rest of my day….but I am still incredibly pissed that it took Kate all of five minutes to forgive His Dickishness, who can stick his stupid secret scheme up his hole. I really, really wish that she had thrown that fucking diamond of his in the sea, but as it is I’ll just have to hope that he chokes to death on his next steak and that Roman (or anyone else, really) is there to pick up the pieces.

The “I’m keeping you in the dark for your own safety” trope is always so fun. Right up there with, “I’m leaving you for your own good, you don’t get a say.”

Cosign, I hate these tropes too.

The towering rage you felt is the reason this is probably my least favourite Kate Daniels book, possibly ranked even lower than book 1. It does introduce Desandra, though, and I adore her, so it’s not all bad.

Totally agreed on Desandra! Curran has been sent off elsewhere at the start of the next (where I’m currently at), but whenever they bring him back it’ll still be too soon for me.
