You’ve read this book before

April 30, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I only post reviews when I am at a computer and I was traveling for five days sans computer so please pardon me if the books I read start to run together. I think they were all different enough that I should be okay? We’ll find out together.

So. Rebel of the Sands. Young adult novel, world in pieces, teenage heroine – we’ve all read this book before. Of the various entries in this particular category, it is one of the better, but it doesn’t really do anything to distinguish itself.

Our main character has a name I can’t remember or bring myself to look up. She is Different and Sick of her Small Town. Then she meets an Exciting Stranger and they are Attacked by Evil Forces, forcing them to flee – Together. Adventure ensues. Magic.

The book is pretty derivative, but at least it’s fun derivative (see also: everything written by Sarah J. Maas). The characters aren’t terrible. I might not care too much about them, but the chemistry even works sometimes. The “twists” are telegraphed a mile away, but I still enjoyed them. I’m not proud of reading this one, but I’m not ashamed of it either. It passes the time and when you suddenly find yourself terrified of flying, it’s an easy book to lose yourself in for the three hours you’re trapped in the death tube hurtling through the air.

I’ll have fun reading the sequel, but I get the feeling it’ll be even harder to milk 250 words out of.
