Finally reading a book I was given for book exchange!

July 5, 2018 by crystalclear 1 Comment

So, as a running theme, this was not what I thought it was going to be.  I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t quite this.

There are three kinds of people in this world.  (Hey, that’s kind of familiar…) We have normal people, full vampires, and Colds, or people who have been bitten by a vampire but have not yet turned.  In order to become a vampire, one must be infected with the vampirism by a bite and then drink human blood. If a Cold does not drink human blood for a period of time (88 days, I think) then they can theoretically fight off the vampirism.  But those 88 days suck, kind of like withdrawal without ever having the good drugs.

We open with a girl waking up at a party where almost everyone else has been killed by vampires. Harsh!  She finds the lone survivor (her ex, of course) along with an unexpected guest, who is a vampire. He’s not in great shape, but he’s actually a badass.  So our trio decides to head to a Coldtown. Coldtown is where the vampires are supposed to be quarantined so they don’t go after the normal people. Regular people and Colds are there as well, both if they want to become vampires or if they have other agendas.  But once you enter Coldtown, you can’t leave.

The lead-up to Coldtown was fine, but once we got there events did not shake out the way I thought they would.  There were a lot of interesting elements, but the direction they took was just, I don’t know. Something would happen, and instead of a *gasp* my reaction was more, “oh, I guess we’re going here now, okay.”I mean, I liked it, and it was a good book, but I got to a certain point where I just didn’t feel like picking it up again.  Maybe I would have liked it more if I had read it all straight through. I eventually finished it (and again, not what I expected) but I still had questions at the end.

We definitely have different reactions to books – I loved this one! The audiobook was so well done, too! But I think it was also a one sitting book for me so that might have helped like you said.
