The Snowy Nap is very classic Jan Brett. You will either LOVE IT or will be “This is okay.” There is little to no “middle ground” to the liking or disliking of the book. However, even if the story does not grab you, as for many people and many of her books, the best part of the story really are Brett’s illustrations. They are worth the price of admission!
The story is sweet: our hero Hedgie does not want to take a winter nap this year. He wants to experience all the wonderful things that winter offers. Snowmen and snowflakes and decorating the chicken coop and hearing the jingle of the bells of the sleigh. Fighting so hard to stay awake Hedgie is shivering in the cold and Lisa (the animals human friend) sees him. She takes him inside, so he will not freeze when the first snow falls. Here, inside he is nice and toasty and what he sees is pure magic! As are the days that follow.
The illustrations hint at things to come and each page has items not part of the immediate story but are fun to look for and, of course, at. The colors are deeply rich and blend together to make them a story within themselves. They is no question this is a Jan Brett tale.
Quirky and ever so busy illustrations make this a book for all ages. Reading aloud will be extra special when cuddled up to your little Hedgie under the blankets, toasty warm inside reading about the wonders of winter!
I was just eyeing this today at my local bookstore. We love Jan Brett books for the charming stories and lovely illustrations!
She’s also a nice person. If you get the chance to meet her, do so!
