Sadly, This Was Not the Book That Made Me Redefine My Wheelhouse

September 28, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Not My Wheelhouse Originally, I was going to use this for my Listicle square but the more I read it, the more I realized how much this book was just not my style! I saw it on Bill Gates’ summer reading list, and I really need to learn my lesson that when people use the word faith they usually mean religious faith specifically rather than some general faith in the universe.  So you know, my bad! The author is a religion professor at […]

It’s All About Timing

Bingo Square: White Whale I attempted to read this last year because it had so many rave reviews and I also felt like it was something I should read to explore more diversity in sci-fi/fantasy.  I think I put it down a few times too often because I kept losing the thread, and combined with the portions in second person, I simply couldn’t get into it. Bingo Square: Backlog This is far from the book that has been in my to read pile longest when all my books are taken into consideration but purely from a Kindle/e-book perspective, it’s definitely towards the bottom of my library. Since I am so late to the game, I doubt there is much I can add to the discussion at this point.  The novel is yet another spin on Pride and Prejudice, but instead of telling the story of Elizabeth and Darcy with a new […]

Selina Kyle and Celaena Sardothien Have a Lot of Similarities

September 27, 2018 by Jen K 2 Comments

I love Sarah J. Maas, even though I also admit that parts of her Court of Thorns and Roses series feel slightly inspired by/ derivative of Anne Bishop’s super trashy yet addictive The Black Jewels series.  Something about the long lived winged warriors seems too familiar for Maas not to be pulling either from the same inspiration as Bishop at minimum, if not from Bishop herself.  In fact, Maas is the reason I even became interested in the DC Icon series despite being more of […]
