I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

A Fly By Any Other Name

Fly by Night is Frances Hardinge’s first novel, but the third or fourth novel of hers that I’ve read. I liked it, and I definitely think that it’s one of the better middle grade novels out there, however it’s not my favorite of her books. Twelve year old Mosca, who is orphaned, lives with her uncle and is smarter than most of the people in her little town. Her best friend is the goose Saracen, because outcasts stick together. When the smooth talking con-man Eponymous […]

It’s not the book, it’s me

For the past couple of years I’ve been hearing about how the Thursday Next series is a great series of books and everything I’ve heard about it has definitely made me think that the series would be a great read. So I put it on my list of books to check out, and when this book came up as the alt for the Vaginal Fantasy July read I thought it would be the perfect time to actually read it (especially because the main book this […]

My Fair Actress

July 27, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

I initially gave this book four stars, however upon reflection I don’ think it’s quite a four star read and I downgraded it to three stars, so we’ll say a solid three and a half stars. This book is set in the same world as Act Like It, which I read last year and loved. This book isn’t as good and features a trope that I strongly dislike, even if that trope is fairly well handled and disguised it still bothers me. However, there were […]

Don’t Promote Your Troubles Beyond Your Rank

July 26, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

Continuing the adventures of Penric, the demon hosting priest of Lois McMaster Bujold’s World of the Five Gods, we have two more novellas: Penric’s Mission and Mira’s Last Dance. These are two very closely related stories, so much so that if felt more like reading on novel then reading two novellas. I enjoy these little stories quite a bit, so realizing that I had two unread stories to read was a treat. In Penric’s Mission, Penric is sent to spy on some duke from some […]
