I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

“I am afraid for your priorities, son”

Jackalope Wives and Other Stories is another short story collection by T. Kingfisher and I loved it. I’ve read a couple of these stories previously, when they were first published, but I love that they’re all collected in one place. I especially that that because while the collection only contains two completely new stories, most of them were new to me. Kingfisher brings her usual sensibility and love of practical characters and talking animal companions to this collection. If you like her work then this […]

Be Afraid to Dream

July 21, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

I know, intellectually, that some people find horror to be cathartic and therapeutic. I may think those people are crazy, but you know I understand that they exist. I am not one of those people, I am the person who spent the whole night in terror because I finished Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None at midnight and was so haunted by the imagery and the deaths that I couldn’t get to sleep (I was 20). And yet, the power of my love for […]

Dead People Aren’t Supposed to Walk Around

Grave Ransom is the fifth book in the Alex Craft series, there may be spoilers in this review though I will try to avoid them. Non-spoilery review? I enjoy this series for the brainless mind-candy that it is. It’s got good female characters, including a strong group of lady friends for our protagonist, and in general it’s just fun Urban Fantasy. I will say, I read this over a week ago and I’ve mostly forgotten it. I had to read the Goodreads blurb to remind […]

The Love of Money

July 18, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

The Nest is a book about how money makes you do terrible things. I initially almost stopped reading it at about the 20% mark because the characters we’re introduced to at that point can easily be summed up with “assholes gonna asshole” and who wants to read that? Fortunately the characters are a bit more nuanced then that, and I was ultimately glad that I continued reading. The plot follows four siblings through one year of their lives. In this particular year, they were supposed […]
