I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

Evil Stone of DOOOOOOOM

I am finding myself feeling rather lackluster about this book. I liked it, it was fine if predictable, but I think I was expecting a lot more and it’s just not there. This is going to be one of those reviews that sounds a lot more negative than I actually feel about the book. I did like it, I’m going to read the next books, but I can’t work up to the level of excitement that I feel has surrounded the book. The premise of […]

We All March To The Empire’s Drum

The question is can I get 250 words out about this short story? I think so, I definitely think it’s worth reading and I want to talk about it, plus I’ve been thinking about it ever since I finished so there’s something here. Carrie Vaughn is one of my favorite writers, but she’s one I forget is one of my favorite writers if that makes sense. She’s not flashy or showy, but she reliably writes some of the most enjoyable stories. I really ought to […]

You’ll Never Be Able to Look Away Again

The Ballad of Black Tom is a retelling of Lovecraft’s short story, The Horror at Red Hook and like the best retellings it’s not necessary to have read original to appreciate it. Amusingly, though The Horror at Red Hook is one of Lovecraft’s stories that is divested from his Cthulhu mythos The Ballad of Black Tom works that story back into Cthulhu and used the Cthulhu mythos, with its racist beginnings, to explore racism in the US. It’s brilliant. Thomas Tester is a conman, a […]

All these women with their dreams shattered

Big Little Lies is a completely devastating murder mystery that deals with domestic abuse, rape and (of course) murder. I’m going to try and not spoil anything else. I don’t think the book is dependent on its twists to be readable, but the way the twists unfold is delightful to watch. If you haven’t read this book yet, go out and read it. Also, I watched the HBO show right after I finished the book, because the obsession is real, and it’s nowhere near as […]
