I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

She Alone Will Wield the Strength and Skill….

This was April’s Vaginal Fantasy pick and I’m going to come right out and admit that I did not finish it. I probably would have finished it, it was annoying but brainless, except that while reading the VF discussion boards I learned that it ends on a cliffhanger and I have no desire to plod though eye-roll inducing trope usage only to find out that the author can’t even write a complete story. This is an ongoing complaint of mine, I have no problem with […]

Dragonopolis Sounds like Every Fantasy Nerd’s Idea of Heaven

April 18, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

I could almost swear that I’ve read this book before, except that I haven’t according to Goodreads. It is entirely possible that I read a hardcover copy of the book and simply forgot to mark that down, but I’m still not really sure. Even though the book feels very familiar, as if I’ve read it before, nothing in it really triggered the certainty that I actually have and so I’m left with this uncomfortable feeling of uncertain déjà vu. The book, and its follow up, […]

So Glad to be Done

April 10, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

So…. I’m done with this series. In case you were wondering, the quality doesn’t pick up at all. Everything that irritated me in the first book is still present here. I’m just… so disappointed in this series. I think the idea is pretty cool, and in the hands of someone willing to actually challenge her characters this could be an interesting series. But that just doesn’t happen. Oh, there are villains, evil mustache twirling villains, but at no point in the book, or series, did […]

Vampires Get Mid-life Ennui Too

April 10, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

Paranormal Bromance is a novella set in the same world as Vaughn’s Kitty Norville novels. However, I don’t think you need to have read those to appreciate this story, though of course reading that series will give you a deeper appreciation for some of what is going on in the story. I really enjoyed it, as it skewers a lot of vampire tropes while looking at what it might be like to stay young while your mind ages. I believe this story is set right […]
