Though the title makes it sound like it’s a collection of new stories, The Starlit Woods is a collection of re-told fairy tales. I had a different perception going into the book, though being a fan of retold fairy tales I didn’t mind that the stories were retellings and not completely original stories. This is a really good collection of stories and while there were a couple I wasn’t fond of, most were very compelling. I decided to check this book out because the list […]
Fairytale Retellings that Didn’t Speak to Me
Black Swan, White Raven is a collection of ‘dark’ fairy tale retellings, and I didn’t enjoy a single story in the collection. I adore fairy tale collections, I have always devoured them, but this one was a pain to get through. This book covered a wide variety, from Sleeping Beauty to Thumbelina. The book was originally published in 1997, but was […]
Confusing, Convoluted, Conservative
I’m not quite sure what I was expecting when I picked up Into Dust, but it was not at all what I wanted or will ever want. To be fair, this is book five in a series and oh boy do you need to have read all five of those novels. In the interests of perfect honestly, I didn’t completely finish this book, I read the first half and last chapter. I’m still completely confused as to what exactly is going on. I bought it […]

The Creature in the Case is a novella set in Garth Nix’s Old Kingdom novels. It takes place after the events of Abhorsen, and you would probably benefit from not reading it out of order. If you’re at all interested in fantasy and you haven’t read these books, you definitely should. They remain one of the more innovative fantasies out there right now. Yes, even tough they’re technically YA novels. Honestly, for my money, Nix is one of the more inventive writers in fantasy and […]
