I was trawling the library’s New Books shelves (as you do when the school year is over, and you can easily read a stack of books in a few weeks), and R.F. Kuang’s debut novel The Poppy War caught my eye. I am trying to read more work by women of color, and science fiction/fantasy is not always the easiest to come by. I decided that this book held an intriguing premise, and I was curious to see how it would pan out. I read […]
32: A much-hyped book that under-delivered a bit.
I’ve been hearing a TON of press about Children of Blood and Bone from a lot of sources, so I moved it up on my queue immediately. I was intrigued by the afro-futuristic setting, and I also want it to succeed in a YA context. Now that I’ve read the novel, I am much more mixed about it. Possession of her is quite handy for anyone in power. Cat’s mother, Alpha Fisa, would rather manipulate her powers to maintain her iron fist upon […]
I’ll tell you, but you’ll never understand. You’re on the wrong side of the dark glass. Only the dead know how terrible it is to be alive
I don’t know if this is a good book or not. It’s pretty silly at times…for example, there’s a part in which someone gives Lestat a VHS copy of the Judge Reinhold/Fred Savage movie Vice Versa…a body switching movie from the 80s that I saw about 50 times as a kid. But in the same moments, this person also gives Lestat copies of a HP Lovecraft story…and I do really like the trope of using real-life books and stories about vamapires and the undead and […]
