46: An uneven and somewhat disappointing debut

June 10, 2018 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I was trawling the library’s New Books shelves (as you do when the school year is over, and you can easily read a stack of books in a few weeks), and R.F. Kuang’s debut novel The Poppy War caught my eye. I am trying to read more work by women of color, and science fiction/fantasy is not always the easiest to come by. I decided that this book held an intriguing premise, and I was curious to see how it would pan out. I read […]

32: A much-hyped book that under-delivered a bit.

I’ve been hearing a TON of press about Children of Blood and Bone from a lot of sources, so I moved it up on my queue immediately. I was intrigued by the afro-futuristic setting, and I also want it to succeed in a YA context. Now that I’ve read the novel, I am much more mixed about it. I’m really not sure how the series is going to play out. Zélie is the daughter of a Reaper, a magical woman who summoned souls. Yet the […]

Breath of Fire is the second book in Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles series. This novel picks up moments after the end of book one with our heroine, Catalia Fisa, healing from deadly wounds. She has a knack for playing fast and loose with her life, much to the chagrin of her lover Griffin. Cat is the Kingmaker, she can detect lies from anyone. Possession of her is quite handy for anyone in power.  Cat’s mother, Alpha Fisa, would rather manipulate her powers to maintain her iron fist upon […]

I’ll tell you, but you’ll never understand. You’re on the wrong side of the dark glass. Only the dead know how terrible it is to be alive

I don’t know if this is a good book or not. It’s pretty silly at times…for example, there’s a part in which someone gives Lestat a VHS copy of the Judge Reinhold/Fred Savage movie Vice Versa…a body switching movie from the 80s that I saw about 50 times as a kid. But in the same moments, this person also gives Lestat copies of a HP Lovecraft story…and I do really like the trope of using real-life books and stories about vamapires and the undead and […]
