Sanderson does detective fiction with a sf twist.

June 21, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

I swear, one of these days Brandon Sanderson will write something that I dislike—something that is boring or trite or that just plain doesn’t work—but that day is not this day. This day that son of a gun has written yet another clever, entertaining story for me to four or five star. And this time he takes on detective stories! With a fantasy twist, of course. In the near future, some sort of supernatural event has reshaped the world, and made it possible to recreate […]

I liked this better two months ago.

This book has definitely soured on me since I finished it in May, which is a shame since I am quite literally about to start the third book tonight. This series for me has turned out so far to be a shoddily written, cliché-packed, predictable behemoth with an uninteresting not-as-smart-or-talented-as-she-or-the-author-thinks-she-is protagonist. It’s very much a yo-yo book for me. One minute I’ll be rolling my eyes so hard I’m about to sprain my optical nerve, the next Maas writes something genuinely interesting. Also, both books […]

If you like the title, you’ll like the book?

*sits speechless for a while* *squints* I liked it?? I’m just going to describe what this novel is about. (Yes this is a book review that lacks words for my opinion about the book. I did a beautiful interpretive dance that conveyed my sentiments exactly, but, alas, it cannot be transcribed to the page.) The novel follows three childhood friends as they venture from the safe life of their village into the army. We meet Amishag, Yael and Lea at school when they are teenage […]

The Passage by Justin Cronin

Okay, But I Have Questions

June 20, 2017 by Gracey the Giant Leave a Comment

So, this series apparently got a lot of hype when the first book, The Passage, first came out.  I was, presumably, living under a rock at the time, and so hadn’t heard of it.  In fact, I didn’t really hear about the series until the final book came out, at which point I decided to read them all. And, well, the first half of the first book was great, the second half was good. The second book was okay, verging on bad and the third book was […]
