In which Rachel discovers some truths about her family she wishes had remained buried

May 1, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is book six in a series, it’s very much not the place to start reading. In fact, there’s a whole bunch of stuff revealed in this book that really requires prior knowledge to the books, so go start at the beginning with Dead Witch Walking. Rachel still has absolutely no idea who killed her boyfriend, and because of the memory potion she drank, her memories of the event are still very fuzzy. Someone is summoning Algaliarept, the demon whom she owes favours to out […]

I was prepared to hate this…or worse….

May 1, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

One thing I often don’t like about sci-fi/fantasy….or whatever you might this novel to be….is when the stakes are entirely fabricated/zone dependent. I mean by this that when there’s no real connection to something that is “real” and what’s happening in the novel, it’s some times hard to care too much about what’s going on the page. A version of this, where the stakes are invented, but turn incredibly satisfying is Dexter Palmer’s novel Version Control. A bad version of this might be like the movie Pacific […]

Secret origins of fiendish pony villains

April 30, 2017 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Last month, I attended a lovely library talk about women in comics. Christina Rice, a local librarian and comics writer, talked about her work on My Little Pony comics. I’ve always been a fan of My Little Pony, but hadn’t really watched the new show. To sate my curiosity, I picked up the My Fiendship is Magic volume. These five comics explore the secret origins of five pony villains. It was interesting to see kingdoms outside Equestria, the main pony land, told from the various POVs. Beware, […]

Fun Junk with a Hint of Handmaiden

April 30, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

God Save the Queen is junk, but it’s fun junk. 3.5 stars really. It reads sort of like a Janet Evanovich novel, not terribly well-written but entertaining because of some interesting characters and narrative possibilities. In a world where vampires and werewolves are in charge (Queen Victoria is one of said vampires), goblins run the underworld (literally), and humans are viewed with suspicion (because they hate the monsters and half-breeds), of course Xandra the half-breed daughter of an aristocrat would discover something unusual about herself […]
