Mike Mullane: juvenile ass & proud of it!

October 28, 2016 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

Look, I get that things were different in 1978 (things = women in the workplace, and the men who harassed them). And they weren’t greatly improved by 2006 (when Mullane wrote this book) or even now. But this is a 400 page book about going into freaking space, and 75% of it is either Mullane and his cronies acting sexist, OR Mullane pointing out sexism in others (while totally making sexist cracks of his own).  When you point one finger at someone, there are three fingers pointing back […]

“Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars…”

I really wanted to read more A.S. King after loving Still Life with Tornado, and one of y’all had reviewed this one positively so I picked it up next. It wasn’t quite as good as Still Life, mostly because the weirdness level was a bit lower and I like weird, but it was still really good — a very touching read in a totally not-sappy way. “All those people who are chained here thinking that their reputations matter and this little shit matters are so freaking shortsighted. […]

Okay, we all agreed that A Head Full of Ghosts rocked, right? I’ve read a few other novels by Tremblay since, and while none of them has really come close to the mindf*** that was A Head Full of Ghosts, this one came the closest. Also, as a PSA: If you liked (is liked the right word?) The Library at Mount Char but haven’t read A Head Full of Ghosts, you should rectify that immediately. But don’t rush out to get this one. Tommy and his two best friends […]

A near-miss

October 28, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Oh this book was SO CLOSE to being SO GOOD, and fell short due to a main character that kept making out with her stepbrother instead of trying to solve the damn mystery! “We bite back the things we can’t say and we cushion every surface for the inevitable moment when they all come fighting out.” Every October for her entire life, Cara and her family have experienced “the accident season”: family members get injured in strange & bizarre ways, and the curse has actually […]
