Tana French & Sophie Hannah are linked in my mind — I started reading their series (both starring murder detectives and lots of twisty twists) around the same time, and I’m pretty sure I found one because the other recommended her. But while Sophie Hannah’s books have been a little…lacking lately, I feel like French’s just keep getting better and better. “I live inside my own skin. Anything that happens outside it doesn’t change who I am. This isn’t something I’m proud of; as far as […]
“I developed a constitution that could only ever be described as able and hardy.”
My husband & I finally started Orange is the New Black a few weeks ago (this is how I read so many freaking books, people — I’m five years behind on must see TV). Kate Mulgrew’s portrayal of Red quickly became one of my favorite performances. She’s tough, she’s smart, and she’s a person. I’m constantly impressed with her. I was so happy to see Mulgrew’s autobiography well-reviewed on this site. While it doesn’t touch on her time as Red (it ends with her role as Capt. […]
“You see it in all animals – the female of the species is more deadly than the male.”
I downloaded this one after reading Caitlin’s review, despite her warnings about the more disturbing bits. I’m glad I did — this book stressed me the fuck out, but it was really pretty incredible. “There are laws in place that stop us from doing things. This is what we tell ourselves. In truth we stop ourselves; the law is a guideline for how to punish someone who is caught.” Alex’s sister Anna was murdered, and now she’s just that dead girl’s sister. People don’t really see her — […]
“BUT ENOUGH SPIRITUALITY. BACK TO TITS AND BAD DECISIONS.”
This book is ridiculous, but very very funny. If you have a twisted sense of humor and no issue with constant all-caps swearing, you ought to check it out. Apparently Cory O’Brien has a blog where he’s been doing this for years, but I’ve never read it so I started fresh with the book. It’s basically him re-telling myths, from Greek to Hindu to Native American to whatever else he can think of, with his own spin and like, a LOT of cursing. It’s all written like […]
