This book had a really cool concept that just did not work here — I thought I would be reading some good horror, and ended up with a slightly bloodier Twilight. “It was possible, I saw now, to be a grotesque, to be huge and free, to wander the streets in utter freedom despite your atrocity, as long as you did it when everybody else was sealed inside their little lit boxes. Now it made sense – why monsters came out at night.” About 100 pages into […]
If you liked A Head Full of Ghosts, read this one
Grady Henrix wrote this fantastic book called Horrorstör, about a haunted Ikea-knock off, that I just loved. It was weird and gross and all around awesome. His next novel, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, does not disappoint; in fact, it’s even weirder and grosser and awesomer. “‘Hot damn!’, he shouted. ‘We got ourselves a demon!’” Set in the 1980s (and wonderfully so — this book is packed to the gills with 80s pop culture), My Best Friend’s Exorcism is about…well, exactly that. Abby’s best friend Gretchen disappears into the forest […]
“Fuck waiting for the world to change you; you start by trying to change it.”
What a cover. Don’t you just want to have a drink with this guy? “No matter what line of work you do, success cannot truly be achieved until you own who you are. The most offensive liability then becomes an asset. It makes you perform your best, regardless of the challenges you might face.” Perlman tackles a lot of personal things in this memoir: his childhood as “the fat kid”, father’s sudden death at a young age, his brother’s fight with mental illness (and eventual suicide) and […]
“I’m the goober with a flashlight, stumbling into corners and crannies, not looking for anything specific but knowing when I’ve found it.”
I love Mary Roach! I was so excited when I heard that she had a new book, and even more excited when I managed to get my hands on a copy from the library. It’s exactly what I hoped for: silly and serious and endlessly fascinating. “Heroism doesn’t always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history. Sometimes a chicken can save a man’s life.” That quote pretty much sums it up. Roach tackles the less […]
