The Heart of Whiteness

Not a bad read, but definitely not worth the time it took to finish. It either needed to be more interesting, or quite a bit shorter… Okay, so to be totally honest, I read this book like two weeks ago and forgot about it and just now realized I never reviewed it. So…there’s your recommendation, basically. But here’s a bit more detail. Goodreads summary: Lemaster Carlyle, the president of the country’s most prestigious university, and his wife, Julie, the divinity school’s deputy dean, are America’s most prominent […]

Loved everything except the title — name it for Harper!

This book exhausted me — I couldn’t wait to find out how it ended, but I got so attached to the characters and so many (SO MANY) bad things kept happening that I had to keep giving myself little emotional breaks. Watch a cat video or two. And then I’d dive back in. “Death and ruin is man’s preferred ecosystem. Did you ever read about the bacterium that thrives in volcanoes, right on the edge of boiling rock? I’ve found that while they tend to be a far cry from groundbreaking, she can be relied upon to create decent characters (who usually have bad-ass best friends — Reid writes great sidekicks and I loved the BFF in this one) and stories that are enjoyable, if not memorable. “This apartment is acting like nothing has changed. Everything has changed. I tell the walls he’s gone.” Forever, Interrupted starts when newlywed Elsie Porter Ross loses her […]

“She would be invisible, of course. No one would hear her. And nothing has happened, really, that hasn’t happened before.”

I love Margaret Atwood. Joe Hill named a boat after her in The Fireman (review forthcoming), and I may have squealed a little in delight when I saw it. I’m still getting through her whole bibliography — I love going to Half Price Books and seeing if they have anything by her that I’ve missed. Her novels and short stories rarely miss the mark for me. Wilderness Tips, a short story collection published in 1991, does not disappoint. “The girls in the stories make such fools of themselves. They are […]
