Way Too Light on World Building and Character Development

January 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note this book will be released on January 25, 2019. Also note that I received this ARC from NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Well I was up for some magical realism because I definitely needed the distraction. Too bad that the story itself was pretty lackluster. You can’t promise me a magical pie shop and then not really show anything that magical. This book also seems to be trying for a cozy mystery theme which didn’t work at all. […]

A fantastical coming of age tale in space

When we decided to read A Wrinkle in Time for our #CannonBookClub, I was ecstatic! Perfect motivation to re-read it before the Ava Du’Vernay’s film release. Before its release, there seemed to be some negative buzz that disheartened me. I felt like I was defending the movie and the book to an extent before it hit the theaters! In the end, I managed to complete my re-read the morning before seeing the film. The refresh with the original text rekindled my childlike curiosity and sense of […]

A reluctant superheroine

Heroine Complex by Sarah Kuhn was fantastic! This is the first novel in a new series about Evie Tanaka, personal assistant and best friend to San Francisco’s number #1 superheroine, Aveda Jupiter. They have been BFFs since they were kids when Aveda was only Annie Chang. They were obsessed with a Michelle Yeoh action flick, “The Heroic Trio”, where martial arts heroes battled The Evil Master. It inspired Aveda to become a hero in real life even before a demonic portal opened up in the […]

Who knew buying a small town on eBay would lead to finding your purpose in life

I had the fortune of visiting The Ripped Bodice to see Beverly Jenkins speak about her new historical romance novel, Breathless. After the event, I was kindly invited to join the LA chapter of Mocha Girls Read book club. I’m so thankful Ms. Jenkins and my favorite bookstore introduced me to a lovely book club group! Having an in-person book club kept up my motivation to read more books to review for Cannonball Read. :) Bring on the Blessings by Beverly Jenkins was the February selection and much needed palette cleanser […]
