A fantastical coming of age tale in space

May 3, 2018 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

When we decided to read A Wrinkle in Time for our #CannonBookClub, I was ecstatic! Perfect motivation to re-read it before the Ava Du’Vernay’s film release. Before its release, there seemed to be some negative buzz that disheartened me. I felt like I was defending the movie and the book to an extent before it hit the theaters! In the end, I managed to complete my re-read the morning before seeing the film. The refresh with the original text rekindled my childlike curiosity and sense of […]

The weirdest afterschool special I’ve never seen

This book was an impulse purchase on a long airport layover a few years ago. I’d heard good things about China Miéville and wanted to give him a shot, and I figured a quick kids’ book read would be a good place to start, and then — classic me — I let it sit on the shelf for nearly two years before getting to it. Un Lun Dun has a lot going for it. The protagonists, Zanna and Deeba, pre-teen girls and best friends, have […]

I’ve been reading a lot of children’s books lately, which is a delightful situation. And The Twenty-One Balloons, in particular, is a delightful book. I first read this book as a child and adored it, and I was so excited to read it again. The Twenty-One Balloons is the story of Professor William Waterman Sherman, a retired math teacher who’s sick of kids and is desperate for some solitude. He decides to take off in a hot-air balloon, with enough supplies to last him a […]

Oh man, the feels!

February 19, 2018 by KimMiE 6 Comments

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love Winnie-the-Pooh. I grew up on the Disney animated versions, and even today when I step foot on a Disney property, Pooh and his friends can expect to be hugged. I’m grateful that I never picked up the books that inspired these theme park favorites until I was an adult, because they are so hilarious, so thoughtful, and so smart, the animated interpretation surely would have disappointed me if I’d been exposed to the books first. If […]
