A resounding meh

September 11, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

2.5 stars. I had heard wildly different opinions about this book before actually reading it, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve seen reviews lambasting it while others raved about it. And I’ve read more than a couple of think pieces lambasting it for its treatment of disabled people and a few defending the story. Ah, Ableism

#LiveBoldly That hashtag was featured heavily in my Twitter time line over the weekend, as the film version of “Me Before You” hit theaters. I had purchased the book at Target while trying to pass the time after a work training, but didn’t realize there was such discussion around it. Athene selects Douglas Fairley-Hulme — which comes at quite a blow to Vivian, who’s head over heels in love with him — gets married, and […]

Mush and Melodrama

May 8, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

My friend A has already announced our June book club pick, and when I tried to get Me Before You from the library, I was on a superlong waiting list. Thankfully, A was glad to loan The Chancellor and me her copy so we could bypass the waiting period. Now that I’m caught up with Book Club, I can focus on getting back on track with my reviews. And it’s becoming clear that there are certain kinds of character or story-oriented books that just don’t […]
