This fire left me feeling tepid

May 9, 2018 by KimMiE Leave a Comment

I don’t normally take advice from the interwebs, but when I took a short “what should you read next quiz” that was posted to the CBR book chat page, the resulting recommendation intrigued me. Home Fire was described as a retelling of Antigone set in modern-day London. I haven’t read any Greek tragedy since high school, so I thought this could make an interesting study, to compare the classic with the modern. I have to confess, Greek tragedies were never my thing. I ate up all manner […]

Lots of people (do I have to tm Donald Trump?) around here have been reading Curtis Sittenfeld lately. I’ve seen the Pride & Prejudice remake reviews, but that wasn’t available on my library’s website, so I downloaded American Wife instead. In my head – and most likely because of the cover – I thought it would be about a Jackie Kennedy-esque first lady, but instead, it became increasingly clear that it’s a thinly veiled tale of First Lady Laura Bush. American Wife is the story […]

Sedition, as the cover implies, is about some crazy tea partiers who want to mix things up in American politics. The President is dead, the Vice President is dead, and some promnient political  players are making their case to take over the Oval Office. Additionally, the previously-mentioned tea partiers have plans of their own. The only thing stopping them is Matti, a low-level intelligence agent with some family baggage. Also, Matti is objectively hot but doesn’t know it! One day, Matti’s gruff and CYA-focused boss puts Matti […]

Burn it all down!

Target: L. E. Modesitt, Jr.’s Antiagon Fire (Imager Portfolio #7) Profile: Fantasy, Political Fiction, Military Two things struck me as I was preparing for this review:  First, I somehow managed to skip Imager’s Battalion during my utter failure of a Cannonball Read 5.  I read the book, but I never got a review up.  Second, I think I ran out of useful things to say about the series back at book five.  The things that I liked are still good, and the elements that are weaker don’t seem to […]
