October 25, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The saving grace for The Dreamer is at the very end. I liked the “full circle” of the pig “admiring the birds” at the start and finish. The in-between is what I am not crazy about. The theme of “keep trying” and “making mistakes” has been done. Many times. The only difference here is that the friends and neighbors of the pig help him. Usually the “keep trying” is seen as a solo act. And the pig listens to the other animals. That seemed like […]

This Chicken is no chicken!

The Hen Who Sailed Around the World by Guirec Soudee is the true story of Soudee’s 3,400-mile sea voyage with his pet hen, Monique. That pretty much sums up the story. There are lots of wonderful photographs of Soudee with Monique. And lots of wonderful photographs of Monique by herself. Not to mention lots of wonderful photographs of some of the friends they meet along the way. And we cannot forget the lots and lots of photographs of ice. Lots and lots of ice. The […]

Claire Messner has created the illustrations showing the reader (slowly as you go along) the apprehension growing on the face of the bus. This is a cute touch and makes it realistic.   Jody Jensen Shaffer It’s Your First Day of School Busy Bus! is a very basic “first day of school jitters” story, but this […]

Transport Trivia

February 25, 2018 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who enjoy trivia, transportation, and / or London In a nutshell: Author Professor David Long provides a sweeping overview of the London Underground, including fun facts, trivia, and more in-depth stories about the people behind it. Worth quoting: “Holden was a Quaker … he too declined a knighthood, maintaining that because successful architecture was the result of good teamwork it would be inappropriate for him to profit from the work of others.” Why I chose it: I went to the Museum of […]
