Just in time for the TV series

December 12, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

This was an absolutely perfect book to read last Saturday when I was home alone all day and got to curl up under a blanket and forget about the rest of the world. Basically everything is perfectly executed in Big Little Lies: — The mystery is compelling and surprising, concealing not only the killer but the deceased. — The characters and the world they inhabit are easy fodder for stereotypes and dismissal as frivolity, but Moriarty humanizes them and gives them dimension. I found myself […]

The Last Anniversary

The Last Anniversary was my last stop on the Lianne Moriarty tour. It was yet another interesting and different story, though I didn’t love it as much as theHypnotist’s Love Story.* The story focuses on Sophie Honeywell, a single woman in her late thirties feeling the full weight of her biological clock. Sophie is known for being a great friend, always willing to entertain her couple friends with her single girl exploits, and up for whatever romantic adventure she encounters. Still, despite her rich social life, Sophie […]

It has the same fantastic tension as Big Little Lies, while maintaining Moriarty’s sense of humour and strong character development. This is not your average story and the plot, characters, and writing are completely original. The hypnotist, Ellen O’Farrell, has watched as her friends slowly paired off and have children. She’s watched love stories and stories of personal triumph unfold […]

What Alice Forgot

December 29, 2014 by competitivenonfiction Leave a Comment

One of my favourite soap opera tropes is the use of amnesia as a way to clear the decks and move an otherwise stale character forward. However, now that I’m no longer watching soap operas because my husband won’t let me have cable I’m a contributing member of society who is above such nonsense, I occasionally need to get my fix of silly plots from books and netflix. When I saw that What Alive Forgot is both by Liane Moriarty and focusses on amnesia, I absolutely had to […]
