A Girl Named Mister

March 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Nikki Grimes is a great prose-poet for young adults. Unfortunately, A Girl named Mister, did not make me think “This is my favorite book!” Had I read it when it first came out, maybe I would have enjoyed it more. I feel others have done the theme better (fourteen-year-old girl falls in love, has sex, gets pregnant). The ending is slightly unique with the reader thinking Mister will give her baby up, yet, due to conflicting emotions, will she? The fact (spoiler) the mother of […]

It’s on my to-read list for the next installment of the MFA and even though I’m not usually a YA fan (especially non-fantasy YA), I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It gives nothing away for me to tell you that the main female, Hannah, pretty much begins the book as a pregnant fifteen-year-old, and is feeling, you know, overwhelmed, distraught and basically like any woman finding out about an […]

Girls, Girls, Girls!

June 16, 2014 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

This graphic novel, published this year, is a short story about two girls (early teens) whose families meet every summer in Ontario at Awago Beach. Rose is an only child whose parents seem fairly ordinary. Windy is an adopted only child who goes to the beach with her mother and grandmother. It is a “coming of age” story that has been getting favorable reviews within comic book circles and even from the New York Times. For a short story (you could easily read it in […]
