Nikki Grimes is a great prose-poet for young adults. Unfortunately, A Girl named Mister, did not make me think “This is my favorite book!” Had I read it when it first came out, maybe I would have enjoyed it more. I feel others have done the theme better (fourteen-year-old girl falls in love, has sex, gets pregnant). The ending is slightly unique with the reader thinking Mister will give her baby up, yet, due to conflicting emotions, will she? The fact (spoiler) the mother of […]
A long time ago, being crazy meant something. Now everybody is crazy.
Okay—here’s the thing: This book won all sorts of awards and I think I put it on my audiobook list because I saw it recommended everywhere. But here’s what bothers me: It’s a fictional portrayal of a fictional girl who was a satellite member of a fictional Manson family, but it borrows almost every detail from the real Manson family so…why bother with the fictional names for everyone and everything? Just make it straight up historical fiction at that point. I don’t know, maybe this […]
Don’t read the end of this book at work… I don’t know how many times I’ve cried at work from books!!
I could not put this book down! I read it over 3 days, and unfortunately I had to work those days, or it would’ve been 1 day! A friend from work knows I love to read. She also knows I read Gone Girl, and that I liked it. Gone Girl is actually mentioned on the front cover of this book. To me, the only similarities between Reconstructing Amelia and Gone Girl is that the stories are told by two different people, and there’s a mysterious […]
Hooray for Complex Teenaged Characters
Sometimes when I decide to read a book, I don’t read the synopsis on the back cover or the specific praise from various newspapers or book review sites inside the front cover. Sometimes I just really like (one of) the authors*, and I read that someone on Pajiba liked it better than The Fault in Our Stars and was up-voted seven times, and I find it at the store when I’m feeling impulsive, and I just read it with no plot information whatsoever. (*I love John Green. […]
