I started a review of this a week or so ago, but I couldn’t think of much to say. I find it harder to review books that are further along in a series, especially a series I don’t think a whole lot of people are reading. Reviews are often a conversation with other readers, even if the other readers aren’t reading my review. Anyway, I didn’t know how to approach my review of Wildfire. One difficulty was that this was the last book in the series, but it felt unfinished. I messaged with Malin for a bit and she told me that Avon is open to publishing more books if the series sells well. If not, the Andrews will consider self publishing more books in the Hidden Legacy world. I hope we get more books, one way or another. It’s a good series that has gotten better as it has progressed.

After abandoning my first review attempt, I went back and reread White Hot, the second in the series, and Wildfire. I think the series benefits from being read back to back. Now that all three books are out, you can go buy them, starting with Hidden Legacy. Mad Connor Rogan has improved significantly from the first book. Andrews has done a good job of evolving him from a murderous psychopath to a man the reader roots for. Nevada has grown into her magic while retaining the core qualities that make her an interesting protagonist. I like that they have grown without becoming different people. I can’t really get into the plot without spoiling the first two books. Just know that you should read them.

There are a lot of loose ends and a whole lot of room in the universe for stories. The primary antagonist is left unidentified, though I have a strong suspicion about who it is. As a side tangent, I think it’s interesting that Andrews continues to create worlds with factions and tribes that essentially make their own laws. In the Hidden Legacy series, there is a legal system run by the state, but also a governance system for magic families that seems to coexist uncomfortably with the state.

I’m going to risk public censure by suggesting that this series is the best Illona Andrews has ever done. I adore Kate Daniels but feel it’s gotten bogged down and frankly should have ended with the great “Kate vs. Roland” battle that was promised from the getgo. Other than the covers, I think this trilogy is just about perfect.

I would rush to buy more if they continue with the series but I sort of hope they don’t and instead focus on the supporting cast, where Connor and Nevada make a few guest appearances but are largely off camera.

I don’t disagree with you. I still love Kate Daniels the most, but you are objectively correct.
