The Reward For a Job Well Done Is More Work

Despite my good intentions, The Prophecy Con jumped the line ahead of Kindred. For a while there, it was the only book I was reading that wasn’t ripping at my soul.

At the end of The Palace Job, it seems like the everything is tied neatly in a bow. The bad guy is ousted, his plan is thwarted, the city and the Republic are safe, the Unicorn is going to get her virgin, and all of the Rogues have had their records expunged and been forgiven for any crimes committed. What further adventures could possibly await after so satisfying a conclusion?

There was a prophecy fulfilled in the first book, which I knew was likely the prophecy referenced in the title of this one. In that prophecy, the sweet young Rybindarius (Dairy) became the Champion Of Dawn and defeated Bi’ul, preventing a takeover by the Glimmering Folk, which would have been bad. It seems like everything should be fine now, except they are not. The Empire and The Republic are threatening to go to war, and somehow Loch is caught in the middle. With Loch being used as a scapegoat, the band gets back together to save Loch, rerecover the elven book they stole in the first heist, and stop the Empire and Republic from destroying each other.

Sidenote: Weekes is clearly a Star Wars fan. I’m in favor.

The Prophecy Con was a fun read. It’s messier and looser than The Palace Job, but that’s ok. The team splits up and there are more adversaries to deal with. There are still stratagems, plots, quips, double crosses and revelations.
